What we do · Justice

A charge is one moment, not an identity.

We work with young people involved with the justice system, and their families, to repair harm and keep them connected to school and community. Diversion is a way to resolve a charge outside of court.

How we help

Accountability that repairs, instead of punishment that repeats.

Diversion

A restorative circle brings together the young person and the people affected. Together they agree on how to make things right.

Court support

Court can be overwhelming. Our team works inside the Ontario Court of Justice in Toronto and helps young people and families understand what is happening, with culturally relevant support. Find us at our desk on the 6th floor.

Continuing care (Aftercare)

Support doesn't end when the circle does. We stay connected as young people get back to school and home.

Every situation is different. Reach out and we'll talk through what could work. We do our best to support every young person who comes to us.

Diversion under the Youth Criminal Justice Act

Two stages, one goal: resolve it outside of court.

The Youth Criminal Justice Act sets out two forms of diversion. Peacebuilders accepts referrals at both stages.

Before a charge

Extrajudicial measures (EJM)

Instead of laying a charge, police can give a warning or caution, or refer the young person to a community program such as ours.

After a charge

Extrajudicial sanctions (EJS)

A more formal program, usually approved by the Crown. When the young person successfully completes it, the youth justice court must dismiss the charge.

young people who complete diversion do not reoffend.

For Crowns, counsel, police, probation and agencies

Refer a young person through our short form. We contact the young person and their caregiver within one business day to complete a short intake. With their consent, we keep you updated.

For system partners

A diversion pathway your organization can use.

We design diversion partnerships with public institutions. A diversion notice is issued instead of a ticket. Peacebuilders then works with the youth and caregiver through a restorative process, and reports results back to you.

We also train frontline staff in restorative practice and de-escalation.
