
The Sister 2 Sister Conference: Empowering Young Women Through Connection and Growth
May 29, 2025On April 22, 2025, the Youth Justice Transformation Lab hosted a lunch and learn for justice professionals to equip new lawyers or those new to practicing in youth justice with the essential knowledge to better assist their young clients and enhance their advocacy skills. The two-hour seminar which attracted 37 attendees provided an overview on Navigating the Youth Justice System, which included an insightful discussion from speakers Mary Birdsell, Executive Director & Lawyer at JFCY, and Althea Coke, Criminal Defence Lawyer on;
· Important aspects of the YCJA and the youth justice process that youth justice lawyers should be aware of?
· Diversion and sentencing under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA)
· The impact of anti-Black racism in the youth justice system and the supports available to justice-involved youth.
Highlight:
The attendees felt that the seminar not only helped them understand the key aspects of the Youth Criminal Justice Act but also made them feel more confident in supporting youth through the youth justice process.
Overall, the event was well received, and attendees found it both impactful and insightful, noting the value of the practical guidance and community resources shared by the speakers.
